Waiting on Wednesday (19): Salt and Storm

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Book: Salt & Storm by Kendall Kulper
Publication Date: September 23, 2014
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

A sweeping historical romance about a witch who foresees her own murder--and the one boy who can help change her future.

Sixteen-year-old Avery Roe wants only to take her rightful place as the witch of Prince Island, making the charms that keep the island's whalers safe at sea, but her mother has forced her into a magic-free world of proper manners and respectability. When Avery dreams she's to be murdered, she knows time is running out to unlock her magic and save herself.

Avery finds an unexpected ally in a tattooed harpoon boy named Tane--a sailor with magic of his own, who moves Avery in ways she never expected. Becoming a witch might stop her murder and save her island from ruin, but Avery discovers her magic requires a sacrifice she never prepared for.

Historical fiction? Check. Fantasy? Check. Romance? Check. I'm sold with the book's premise and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will deliver.

  14. I already reviewed this one and gave it a 2.5 /: I still enjoyed it, there was just a lot of issues I had. I hope you end up enjoying this one more than me, it certainly did have so much potential. I just wish that in my eyes it lived up to it. Maybe go in with this one with lowered expectations and you'll find yourself enjoying it more than me!

  16. Really looking forward to this one as well! ... Even though it sounds like every other YA fantasy ever, haha. (Attractive guy and instant attraction? Greatest recipe for instalove if I ever saw one.) Okay, I'll stop being such a pessimist. I really need to be more positive about books. Maybe that's why I haven't been enjoying them as much. xD

The cover's lovely, and I love how witches seem to be portrayed as heroes here -- a lot of other books have them burned at the pyre or hunted down. Hoping that it won't be a disappointment, too!

    1. Haha! I'm quite scared of the instalove as well, Megan. But I'm keeping my hopes up that the story would be more enjoyable. Witches are cleverly fun. Look at Hermione! Heh! :p
