When George, the butcher's boy, is fired for stealing coins from the till, Maisie knows in her heart he is innocent. With her little dog Eddie as the Watson to her Sherlock Holmes, Maisie uses her budding detective skills to solve the mystery of the stolen sixpence, vindicate her old friend, and even help a new friend in need. The first book in a series! - (source)
I've been meaning to read a book in which I could simply lose myself in, and The Case of the Stolen Sixpence came at just the right time. Who would've thought that this observant girl who sweep floors in her Granny's apartment and hates shopping (unless it's an excuse for sleuthing) would whisked me straight to Victorian London?
The huge grin on my face didn't vanish at all from the moment I started reading until I turned the last page. It's like I've tapped into a whimsical story I could see myself enjoying back when I was younger and even now. The illustrations added to the book's engrossment factor and it would surely entice even those kids who are reluctant to open a book.
Maisie is very good at spotting things. But having detecting skills are not enough, you need cases to solve and maybe a detective paraphernalia or two to look the part. Can you see the dilemma our aspiring detective is in?
Needless to say, Maisie is a charming character and she has moxie others can only dream of having. As a curious kid, she and Nancy Drew might just become great pals and even Sherlock Holmes would find her greatly amusing. Maisie is a joy to read and her faithful dog assistant is just as cute.
The Case of the Stolen Sixpence is a Middle Grade mystery novel that will tickle the imagination of young ones as well as those who are still in touch with their youthful spirit. It's a delightful, quick read filled with adorable characters I'd surely love to get to know more in future installments.

Aww this sounds like such a cute and fun book. Maisie sounds like an adorable little detective who I could really love. I don't normally read MG books, but I think I would like this book. I'm so glad you were able to thoroughly enjoy this, Sarah. Lovely review! :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you try this one out, Nick. With only 176 pages, you'll breeze through it. (:
DeleteI'm always on the lookout for fun books to recommend to my younger cousins and my nieces, so thank you for sharing this one Sarah! And I completely understand needing a book to just lose yourself in, I need to do that sometimes too. It's easy to get caught up in all the review books, and there are times when I just want a book that's going to entertain me. Glad this was that book for you!
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome, Jenny. I know the kids will just enjoy this. And yes, this book was so refreshing. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from Mary Weber.
DeleteOh this one sounds so cute and adorable! I have a younger sister so I love coming across reviews for MG books so I know which ones to buy her to instill that love of reading in her! Great review :)
ReplyDeleteHaha! I know what you mean, Lily! I have so many younger cousins and I pledged to myself that I'll hook them into reading. It's just that right now they can only understand Filipino and a little English. So I'm really glad that this book came in with illustrations so they can at least browse the pages by themselves while I translate everything. :D
DeleteTHIS SOUNDS SO CUTE! <3 I love mysteries and while middle grade isn't my usual genre, I always enjoy reading an MG book once in a while, and it sounds like this is one I'll definitely have to keep in mind for when I'm in the mood for an MG book. Thanks for sharing and, as always, FABULOUS review Sarah! <3

Any story that features a dog as a character is an automatic win in my books. Cute characters, and a fun plot are key elements in a good MG novel IMO, so all-in-all I'd say that The Case of the Stolen Sixpence is firing on all cylinders. Fab review!
ReplyDeleteI love that name: Maisie. So cute. And I'm with Carmel -- a dog as a character is always a win in my book.
ReplyDeleteOMG, that looks so sweet and amazing. I really want to read it right now. The best thing about MG books is that most of them are illustrated. I wish we could get more YA books with illustrations. I hope someone will work on that! Anyhow, this seems like a really interesting stroy and my youthful spirit is alive! :) Amazing review, girl :)
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely to see you read MG. You seem to have such an open heart for this genre...and I do too actually. Have you read The Storybook of Legends? It's one of my favorites. Also, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which got a 5 star from me, hehe. ;) Cute review, Sarah, I agree that sometimes I also read some books just to escape and have a good time, nothing heavy but light instead.
ReplyDeleteSo incredibly cute! I love middle grade novels, some of them are just so lovely and have beautiful messages for children in them. I love mysteries, this one reminds me of the old Nancy Drew series, the earlier editions for kids. Thanks for sharing Sarah, going to check this one out. Great review <3
ReplyDeleteSounds like a really fun, fluffy MG novel with some great characters. The illustrations look beautiful as well. I should explore more of the MG genre, but you know, so many amazing books to read! Lovely review Lola.
